=======================
Note: Properly seasoned birch is in short supply this year and prices have gone up significantly
due to high demand, market and transportation (fuel) factors. Our prices may seem high but are fair considering the market.
The Real value and cost are affected by Measurements !
You may find lower prices with other suppliers ..but you must compare the value of tight stacked cord measures against loose stacked ones. Raven uses acurate tight stack measurements for all of it's deliveries, almost all other companies only offer loose stacked measures that can be an average of 30% to 40% less wood than a true stacked cord or portion thereof.
We hear this all the time, most clients that have been using other firewood suppliers and then buy from us for the first time, comment that it seems they were getting noticeably less wood from the other suppliers compared to our palletized firewood.
Example : even though a 1/2 ton pickup truck can hold a half a cord of firewood volume wise when tight stacked, in reality it can only hold about one third of a cord ( under ideal circustances) or less if loosely thrown in. So if your supplier shows up with a half ton truck with loose firewood and tells you it's a cord or even a half a cord, you're not getting what you paid for !
Even when the price is as much as $200.00 or more cheaper per cord, if you are only getting a half to three quarters of a cord but paying for a full cord, the perceived savings is lost. This is especially true with unseasoned birch. When birch is green ( cut a year or less) it's volume is greater for the water content and a lot heavier, if you buy birch seaoned for longer like a 1-2 years it will shrink about 20-30 %...in this case less is more, the shrunken seasoned firewood is superior in heat output and burn time plus you are getting more. Unseasoned firewood is not a good deal if compared to properly seasoned firewood.
In Calgary most birch is sold by garden centres and seasonal firewood resellers looking to make a quick buck. I guarentee most of these people don't have a working knowledge of firewood and are not concerened about selling unseasoned firewood. Asking them is pointess as they don't know or often care what the moisture content is. They will try and convince you to buy it. Just because it burns does not mean it's properly seasoned and ready to go...beware.
Unseasoned birch firewood is simply the worst thing for your chimney, the high moisture in it carries the creosote out as steam and it condenses rapidly in your flue and chimney. With dry birch (under 18% moisture) this will not happen as the wood burns optimally with little creosote output.
Our firewood is hand picked and loaded to insure that the amount is correct, this also insures that you are not paying for 25% of your order as bark and gravel because a skid steer loader was used to dump it into the delivery vehicle.
